Prison Recipes

Phillip tells us that while the prison menu isn't too bad these days prisoners also get creative to make treats like slices, ice cream, pizza, cakes, and other food that they like by using everyday products purchased through the prison canteen system. So here are some examples of a few prison recipes Phillip has shared with us in the time we have known him. Photos are illustrative only.

Base

  • 1x bag of Farmbake shortbread biscuits finely crushed
  • Add 5x prison issued butter rations to crushed biscuits and mix until biscuit crumbs combine
  • Press combined biscuits into 2x 1 litre containers divided equally

Topping 

  • 1/2 a bag of whole milk powder into container and add prison issue green milk and mix to a semi-stiff consistency 
  • Add drinking chocolate or raspberry / orange and mango / lime Raro to taste and mix
  • Evenly divide topping between shortbread bases
  • Layer different flavours if desired
  • Refrigerate or put in a cool place to set

  • 1/2 a bag of whole milk powder into 1 litre container
  • Add 1 and 1/2 prison issue 300ml green milks and mix thoroughly until no dry milk powder or lumps 
  • Flavour to taste with drinking chocolate or raspberry / orange and mango / pineapple Raro
  • Can add crushed Tim Tam biscuits to chocolate flavour for cookie and cream effect, or chopped up party mix lollies to Raro flavours for goodie googie gum drop effect
  • Freeze for no longer than 6 hours to avoid ice forming in the ice cream

Pizza Base

  • Save lunch bread with fillings removed until approximately 20 slices are saved
  • Remove crusts and then break bread up into small pieces
  • Add prison green milk to combine bread to a dough
  • Shape dough to a pizza shape and cook on toasted sandwich maker

Toppings

  • Save cheese and onion from sandwiches 
  • Save roast beef from sandwiches and or chicken from dinner meal
  • Cut up cheese and meat
  • Spread prison issued tomato sauce on pizza base
  • Add toppings with cheese and cut up olives from canteen last
  • Put back in toasted sandwich maker to grill the top

Cake Base

  • 1x packet of Farmbake chocolate chip biscuits finely crushed
  • Add 5x prison issued butter rations to add moisture
  • Mix in prison issue green milk and mix to a semi-stiff mixture 
  • Divide mixture evenly between a couple of 1 litre containers
  • Cook in microwave for 8 to 10 minutes or until cooked
  • Allow to cool

Topping

  • Add half a bag of whole milk powder to a container
  • Add prison issue green milk and mix to a stiff mixture
  • Flavour to taste with drinking chocolate, or raspberry / orange and mango / pineapple Raro
  • Divide topping evenly between the 2 cakes
  • Allow icing to set at room temperature or in a fridge if available
